Welcome to West Essex Aeromodellers' Website.
Spring 2024
West Essex Aeromodellers has around 80 members of whom the primary interests are fixed wing sport and scale models.
Flying is available every weekday and weekend all year round at our site situated near Basildon and we have a programme of annual low-key flying and social events for members and their families.
WEA is an affiliated member of The British Model Flying Association and all members are required to hold BMFA insurance and be CAA registered. A minimum of BMFA 'A' certificate level is required for unsupervised flying and new members at any level may be asked to perform an initial check flight.
Being privately owned agricultural land, there is no open public access or rights of way to our flying site, therefore at the request of the land owners, casual visits by non-members without prior arrangements are discouraged. See contact details below.
The West Essex Aeromodellers club was officially founded in 1947, although we have documented evidence of activity dating to 1943. 2024 is our 77th year of continuous operation and we are one of the UK's oldest Aeromodelling clubs. We actually have roots stretching even further back to before WW2 from a number of smaller pre-war clubs and groups based in East London and our early membership included many of that era's young aeromodelling experts (Ron Moulton, Eddie Keil, Dennis Allen, Dave Platt, to name but a few).
Post war, WEA members enjoyed much success in national competitions and several of our members, inspired by developments from the USA, were among the early UK pioneers and experts in the field of control line and radio control, with regular mentions and articles published in 'Aeromodeller'.

A level and open farmland field of approx 20 acres and only a few steps from our secure car park to the flying area.
Large high quality L shape East/West and North/South closely mown grass patch that is regularly and extensively maintained by our groundsman and is currently undergoing further improvements to both the flying area and members' facilities which we believe are among the best in the country. Ideal for larger retract equipped scale and higher performance models that generally require a longer length of good surface to operate from. Well drained during the winter months.
Amenities -
Hard stand approach and car parking close to flying area accessed via locked gates. Public house and meeting venue nearby. Well appointed and comfortable cabin to shelter from bad weather or view the flying on cold days.
